Things to do in Berlin, Germany
1. Brandenburg Gate
Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most popular landmarks. Yes, it is on everyone’s list of things to do in Berlin, but it is something that should not be missed. Epic, historical, and chilling due to its role in World History.
2. Holocaust Memorial
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial, is a harsh reminder of the horrific events that took place under the Nazi Regime in Berlin. When touring this bustling city, you are reminded of the atrocities of the Third Reich and its effect on the world at this haunting memorial.
The Tiergarten is across the street from the Holocaust Memorial. You may wish to escape the loud noises and city traffic after visiting the memorial. I would suggest stepping into the quiet Tiergarten park. There are many benches here, along with unique German sculptures, and the park provides a tranquil place to be in Berlin.
4. Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was the crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. It is a big tourist stop and can be crowded at times but not only is it one of the free things to do in Berlin, but it is also very symbolic.
5. Berlin Wall
There are many places to get a sight of the Berlin wall. I visited the part of the wall that is located in front of the Topography of Terror museum. If you want to see historical photos and read about WWII history, then I would suggest stopping at The Topography of Terror. Afterwards, you can step outside and view the Berlin Wall.
You can get a free tour (specific times a day) of the Konzerthaus and an informative guide to show you around this fascinating building. If you are a music lover stay for a performance in the world-renowned Konzerthaus.
7. Museum Island
Museum Island is located in Mitte; five museums were built on this island in the River Spree. You can buy a pass to see multiple museums on the island or choose to walk around and take in the sights. The museums located here are also famous for their architecture, and the island is a world heritage site.
8. Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom)
I have been to more churches than I can count in Europe, and after a while, they tend to all meld together. Berlin Cathedral is not one of them. The 360 view of Berlin at the top of the dome is fantastic! I am not even going to post a picture of the view because it won’t do it justice and I want you to experience it for yourself. Located on Museum Island, and worth the visit. This should actually be number 1 on your list of things to do in Berlin, and don’t forget the climb up those seemingly endless stairs has a pay off!
9. Eat Turkish Food in Kreuzberg
Kreuzberg is a hip and trendy neighborhood with distinctive street art and delicious food. The neighborhood has a large Turkish population and is the best place to eat Turkish food in Berlin. You can order from a street market, or stop into one of the Turkish restaurants in the neighborhood; you are guaranteed to enjoy your meal!
10. Pratergarten-Beer Garden
Pratergarten is the oldest beer garden in Berlin and my favorite. It is located in Prenzlauer Berg which is a cool neighborhood to shop and eat. Pratergarten is also close to Mitte, and I felt safe walking around the area at night. When in Berlin even for a day, visiting one of the cities Biergarten’s is a must for things to do in Berlin. If you don’t drink beer, you can still enjoy good German food and the upbeat outdoor vibes at the beer garden.
